Madge O'Donnell
Madge (Madgie) O'Donnell was
born in October 1875 in Craghey, Dungloe, Co. Donegal, to Bridget Brennan and Denis O'Donnell.
Madgie travelled to the US on the 1st June, 1896 on the SS City of Rome. It is not known whether she went directly to Bayonne, New Jersey on her first trip, but she was living there on 26th May 1902. She returned to Ireland in 1904.
Her second crossing to the US was on 4th April 1905, aboard the SS Caledonia, returning to her sister Grace O'Donnell at 87 Danforth Avenue. Although Madgie gave the address as Bayonne, Danforth Avenue is actually located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Grace made the same mistake in 1908. According to Madgie’s step-grandson, Willard Miller, Grace and Madgie shared the Danforth Avenue apartment in Jersey City for a few years thinking all the while that the lived in Bayonne.
Late in the year 1908 Madgie sails back to Ireland for a few months to see visit her mother in Craghey. She returned to Bayonne aboard the SS Columbia on 10th May 1909.
Madgie married John O’Donnell, son of Daniel O'Donnell and Mary Duggan on 17th October 1916 in St Vincent de Paul RC Church, Bayonne, New Jersey, USA. The family were known as ‘The Slopers’. John was born in September 1882 in Knockastolar, Gweedore, Co. Donegal. The witnesses were Patrick Peyton and Cecilia (Síle) O’Donnell.

John, 'Margry', Daniel and Winifred were living at 46W 53rd St, Bayonne, in 1920. John was a 'Stillman' at the Tidewater Oil Refinery. John's 'cousins' Edward and Charlie Dunlop were also living in the household. Edward was a fireman at the Tidewater Oil Refinery. Charlie was not in employment.
In 1930, John, 'Margrie' and Winifred lived in Bayonne. They had three Irish boarders.
John and 'Marjorie' lived at 46 W 53rd St, Bayonne, in 1940.
Madgie died on 9th September 1958 and John died on 16th May 1962 in Bayonne.
